Carmel’s Guidance Counselors- Taking a personal approach with each student

Carmel’s guidance counselors understand teenagers and they know the high school years can be tough to navigate. The counselors stand ready to help students adjust to high school life, deal with personal concerns, resolve conflicts, choose the correct classes, improve study skills, and apply to their colleges of choice.

Carmel Catholic’s staff of five full-time counselors is always available to provide information to students to help them make the right decisions, so students can make the most of their high school years and maximize their educational and spiritual experience at Carmel.

Counselors Strive To Help Students:

  • Develop a mature sense of responsibility
  • Become aware of themselves as unique, worthwhile individuals
  • Achieve a measure of self-discipline
  • Achieve a level of academic performance commensurate with potential
  • Develop the ability to make good educational and personal decisions
  • Develop sound problem-solving techniques to apply in all areas of life

Social Services

Carmel offers several student support groups throughout the school year.  The groups are designed to give students a place to share with other peers who may be experiencing similar struggles during high school.

  • Grief and Loss Support Group

    • This group is for students whose loved one has died and who would benefit from additional support in dealing with this loss.
  • Divorce Support Group

    • This group is for students who are dealing with separation, divorce and/or a blended family and who would benefit from additional support through these kinds of changes.
  • Stress Management Group

    • This group is for students who may be overwhelmed by academics, athletics, family dynamics, and other factors and who would benefit from additional support and strategies to relieve stress.

Groups meet approximately once a week during the school day.  Groups will rotate through periods so that students do not miss the same class a number of times.

Teachers have the right to refuse a student’s pass to group.  Students excused from class to participate in a group are expected to make up work missed during that period.

All interested participants will be interviewed individually prior to group.  You will be informed of a start date at this time.

If you are a student interested in participating in one of these groups and/or you have another concern that you would like to see addressed in a group format, please see Mrs. Carlson in the Guidance Office regarding Social Services.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs. Elizabeth Carlson, MSW at 847-388-3364 or ecarlson@carmelhs.org
